Portugal Countryside Montemor-O-Novo Évora

Passei os últimos dias num monte em Montemor-o-Novo, em Évora, com a minha amiga Cristina para relaxar, escrever e estar um pouco isolada de Lisboa. Foi a minha primeira vez por ali. Embora já conheça Évora q.b, nunca tinha estado em Montemor e, para quem passar por ali, vale a pena parar. É uma cidade pequena, com ruas tradicionais, painéis de azulejos que retratam episódios da cidade, casas senhoriais que ainda se mantêm de pé e alguma história interessante para se conhecer.

O Castelo, lá no topo e visto em toda a cidade, é o ex-libris de qualquer passagem por aqui. O mais engraçado é que, originalmente, Montemor existia dentro das muralhas – isto lá para o ano de 1100 – e terá sido conquistado por D. Afonso Henriques depois. As muralhas foram mais tarde reconstruídas no reinado de D. Dinis mas, a partir do séc. XVI, a população começou a abandonar a vila dentro do Castelo e a construir as suas habitações nas redondezas – o que deu lugar à actual cidade. Lá de cima, do Castelo, pode-se apreciar a vista de toda a cidade.

Outro ponto a visitar é o santuário da Nossa Srª da Visitação, situado num outro ponto alto da cidade (oposto ao Castelo e com vista para lá) e com muita história associada a milagres e promessas. O milagre mais conhecido é o do soldado português que, a combater fora de Portugal, se cruzou com uma monstruosa cobra. No momento, o soldado rezou à Nossa Srª da Visitação e disse que, se sobrevivesse, iria esfolar o bicho e entregar a sua pele à santa. Salvou-se, cumpriu a promessa e, se forem à Igreja, lá está a pele da cobra pendurada. Nas fotografias que coloco aqui no post, podem ver o interior da Igreja e a sala dos milagres e das promessas. Lá encontram-se milhares de pedidos de protecção e agradecimentos. As pessoas oferecem fotografias, molduras, cabelo, ouro, muitas deixam escrito o motivo do agradecimento e podem ler histórias e pedidos até de 1800. Eu estive a ler uns quantos… protecção na guerra, sorte na faculdade, protecção em doenças, boa-sorte no nascimento de bebés, de casamentos, namoros, etc. Na sala dos quadros, essas pinturas representam milagres que foram feitos pela Nossa Srª da Visitação. É fascinante o que se encontra dentro da Igreja e o poder da fé.

No resto do tempo, estive sempre no monte com os animais, descansei, vi muuuuitos filmes, li e desliguei totalmente das redes sociais e do trabalho. O tempo passou a voar mas fiz um detox e voltei para Lisboa com os chakras alinhados ahah.

I spent the last few days in a farm in Montemor-o-Novo, Évora (Portugal countryside in Alentejo), with my friend Cristina just to relax, write and be a bit away from Lisbon. It was my first time there and, for those visiting the neighborhood or Évora, it’s worth stopping and walk through this little city. It’s a small town with traditional streets, tile panels with episodes from the city, stately homes that remain standing and some interesting history to find out.

The Castle, at the top of the hill, is the ex-libris of any staying in Montemor-o-Novo. The funny thing is that, originally, this town, conquered by King Afonso Henriques, existed within the walls of the Castle. Later, the walls were rebuilt in the reign of King Dinis but, by the XVI century, the population began to leave the village within the Castle and build their houses nearby – which lead us to the current city. From above the Castle, you can enjoy the view of the entire town.

Another spot to visit is the shrine of Our Lady of the Visitation, located in another high point of the city, and with a lot of stories about miracles. The best-known miracle is the one about a Portuguese soldier that crossed with a monstrous snake. At that moment, the soldier prayed to Our Lady of Visitation asking to be saved. He prayed that, if he survived, he would kill the animal and give its skin to the Church. He was saved, then he fulfilled the promise and you can see the snake skin hanging on the wall of the church of Our Lady of the Visitation. In the photos, you can see, inside the Church, the room of the miracles and the promises. There are thousands of requests for protection and thank you letters. People usually offer photographs, frames, hair, gold, many leave letters with their promises and requests and you can read them all. There are photos and requests even from the year 1800. In the room of the paintings, these are paintings that represents miracles done by Our Lady of Visitation. These rooms are fascinating and you can feel the power of faith.

The rest of the days, I was always on the farm with the animals, I slept a lot, saw dozens of movies, read and totally hung up on social media and work. It was a kind of city detox.
